High on Mount Mainalo, MANNA rises from a clearing in the fir forest. Stratis Batagias, now MANNA’s owner, first explored the abandoned sanatorium as a child; the idea of restoring it stayed with him into adulthood. Founded by philanthropist Anna Mela in 1929, the sanatorium later stood empty for more than eight decades. After years of careful restoration, MANNA reopened in 2023. Its tall windows look out across the wooded slopes, keeping the forest close and the building’s history present.

A landmark among the firs.

A wooden path leads through the trees to the lily pond; inside, the same wooded slopes fill the lounge windows. The garden and the rooms offer different places to pause within that view. K-Studio and Monogon worked with archaeological authorities on the listed building’s widely awarded restoration, preserving its grey limestone and original mosaic floors. Chestnut panelling, soft fabrics and generous seating warm the interiors without competing with the view. MANNA heats and cools with geothermal energy, uses no single-use plastics, draws most of its staff from the area and supports the restoration of churches and historic buildings in nearby villages.

Further into Arcadia.

Beyond MANNA’s grounds, forest paths and sections of the Menalon Trail lead towards stone-built villages. In season, guided truffle walks with a trained dog offer another way into the woods. In the Lousios Gorge, paths follow the river past monasteries built into the cliffs, including St John the Baptist. This is also a working landscape, with flocks and villages among the wooded slopes. There is no need to fit it all into a day: choose a walk and leave time along the way.

forest in.

MANNA’s 32 rooms and suites offer different views of the historic building and its setting. Beneath a timber-lined gable, a broad window opens onto the fir-covered slope. Some rooms have balconies or decks; the MANNA Suites have freestanding copper baths. Warm timber and natural fabrics bring the surrounding colours indoors.

A walk through the firs can end at MANNA Wellness & Spa, with its cave-like pool, treatment rooms and saunas indoors and among the trees. Yoga and Pilates offer another way to slow the pace.

When the mountain turns inward.

Winter quietens Mount Mainalo in layers. When snow comes, it softens the paths, gathers on the fir branches and draws the gaze back toward stone, timber and firelight. From a distance, MANNA becomes a small pool of warmth within the blue-white forest. A slow breakfast, a hushed walk in fresh snow, then time in the cave pool or forest sauna. Winter does not close Arcadia; it reveals a more intimate version of it.

Location

Mount Mainalo · Arcadia · Greece

MANNA rests at 1,200 metres in the fir forest of Mount Mainalo, near Magouliana in the central Peloponnese. The drive takes two hours from Athens or one from Kalamata. The final approach follows mountain roads into the forest; allow extra time for the journey in winter, when conditions can change.
